A
sk anyone who lives, works, or plays in South Baldwin County, and they will tell you that the quality of life here is one of the best in the state of Alabama and in the South. With a record of phenomenal and well-managed growth; deep roots in the agricultural, fishing, timber, and tourism industries; outstanding natural resources, recreational opportunities and tourist attractions; and acclaimed educational and cultural programs, South Baldwin is the kind of place people don't want to leave.

FOLEY At the center of it all is Foley -known as "The Heart of the American Riviera" - which prides itself on its hometown atmosphere and its progressive attitude. On Foley's downtown streets, people stop to talk to each other and congregate at a quaint soda fountain. The neighborhoods that grow in all directions from the intersection of highways 59 and 98 are a series of neat blocks lined with ancient oak trees shading wide streets. A Tree City, Foley gives away thousands of trees each year. Visitors are welcomed by John B. Foley Park, which centers on a fountain and is hung with flowering baskets. Bargain hunters flock to the Tanger Outlet Center's more than 120 stores and to Foley's antique malls. Foley is home to the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, which for over 50 years has serviced business and industry in the area. The Chamber office is located in the former library at the city's main intersection, and offers visitors an array of informative pamphlets and brochures full of information about the area. It also houses a conference room and a courtyard. Behind the Chamber is the historic railroad depot, and houses the Foley Archives and History Museum.

SUMMERDALE Just north of Foley lies Summerdale, which offers a picturesque view of rural farm life and lives up to its slogan, "The Sunshine City."

ELBERTA To the east, Elberta is the home of the famous Elberta Sausage Festival, which is held the last Saturday of each March and October to celebrate the city's rich German heritage. The Festival draws thousands of visitors to the area for a taste of authentic German sausage and other dishes.

LILLIAN On Perdido Bay, the community of Lillian has a history that dates back to the early Spaniards. Many of its present-day residents are retirees from all over the United States.

WEEKS BAY Two of the counties historic districts include Magnolia Springs and Bon Secour. Just west of Foley, Magnolia Springs, nestled on Fish River, is one of the few remaining places in the United States that receives mail delivery by boat. The beautiful and quiet Bon Secour has provided a "safe harbor" for fishermen since the LeMoyne brothers built a hunting and fishing lodge there in 1702.

PLEASURE ISLAND On Pleasure Island, Gulf Shores, and Orange Beach are South Baldwin's resort communities, with 32 miles of white sand beaches, stylish beach houses, high-rise hotels and condominiums, seafood restaurants, and year-round visitors from all over the world. World-class golf waits at numerous locations throughout South Baldwin County. Fishing, sailing, swimming and walking on the beach are some of the favorite activities of residents and visitors alike along the Gulf Coast.

SURROUNDING CITIES Adding to the desirability of South Baldwin's local charm, two large cities are located within an hour's drive to the east or west - Pensacola and Mobile. With airports, malls, restaurants, theatres, and other city amenities so close by, residents of South Baldwin can enjoy the convenience of big cities while still enjoying their easy-going lifestyle near the Gulf and the rivers that flow through the area.
